You are Grain

At Grain, we have the opportunity to build the company that we always want to be part of. So why not build the perfect company together, a place where we can all make an impact, earn and grow in? And since we spend most of our waking hours together, why not make everything fun? Even if you leave one day, we hope you leave Grain in a better place than you found it.

This starts with having the right people to do this with — and if you are reading this, it means you may be one of us. You are Grain.

This literally means everyone working at Grain represents Grain. When a customer calls in and Jhen picks up the phone, Jhen is Grain. When Bala delivers food to our customers, Bala is Grain. The food Ah Wu cooks represents Grain.

The reason why we are surviving and have grown to serve millions of customers is because of this very simple, yet profound, a concept called Grain’s Circle of Life:

Why do we do what we do? One of the best ways to create meaningful food experiences is to WOW our customers. Treat our customers the way we would like to be treated. Practise hospitality - notice the details others will miss, anticipate needs before they arise, and go the unexpected extra mile for our customers. Trigger their (and our) happy hormones. People will remember how you made them feel, so create an experience that is magical for them!

There's a saying in Grain that "fun is a subset of high performance". It's way more enjoyable and energising when we're working with people who take pride and passion in what they do. High standards are contagious and help us build better products and services. People are drawn to high standards - they want to join our team and will adapt quickly. High standards also mean less waste, more profits, reduced bureaucracy, and better focus!

In many ways, we built Grain to feel like a home. We love it when everyone brings their whole self to work and enjoys what they do. We don't like working with assholes. A lot more gets done when you don't care who gets the credit — so uplift each other, don't step on your neighbour, genuinely care — and never be afraid to have a little fun.

As the team grows, consensus building isn't always the path to finding the best ideas. Often times in meetings, you may find yourselves agreeing without fully supporting an idea. Don't do that. Disagree / Challenge if you need to until the best ideas emerge - then do everything to commit to making them win (harder when it's not your own idea — but a lot more fun going the same direction together!).
